TOPOGRAPHY
1. What is topography?
The mapping of height
2. What does a topographic map tell you, that other maps can't?
They can show you elevation
3. Who might use a topographic map and why?
> Some examples are marine scientists, geographers, farmers, etc. They would use it to map the ocean and lands or for directions.
4. Define the following:
Elevation- height of a place relative to a reference height.
Contour Lines- line connecting points that have the same elevation.
Contour Interval- difference in elevation between the adjacent contour lines.
Depression Contour- contour line indicating a downward slope (drawn w/ hatch marks).
Practice Questions:
1. Which of the topographic maps shows two peaks? Which side has higher elevation?
> C; the left side
2. Which topographic map shows the steepest cliff? Where is it?
> B; the right side
3. Can you tell the elevation of the topographic feature in plot B exactly? If so, what is the elevation, if not, why and what would be your closest guess?
> No because it is not labeled.
4. Which topographic map has a contour interval of fifty (50) feet?
> A
5. Which of the topographic maps depicts a canyon, or depression?
> B
